The Origins
Most rabbit breeds are created by adults. Sure, a few of them are created accidentally. However, many rabbit breeds are bred for a purpose. This could be for fur or, most likely, could be for meat.
The Cinnamon Rabbit breed wasn’t created under any of these rules. You see, it was an accidental creation from two children. It started out with the crossbreeding of a New Zealand rabbit and a Chinchilla rabbit. They produced a lot of offspring, but only one was kept.
The two kids then joined a breeding group. The rabbit they kept was bred with a Chequered Giant and a Californian. These rabbits gave birth to a few rabbits we now know as the Cinnamon Rabbit breed.
But, even then, the family still didn’t know what they had. They were not really ‘up to date’ with the world of breeding, so they mostly just raised the rabbits until they were informed that even rabbits that were not purebred could be shown off at shows.
The Cinnamon Rabbit became an officially recognized breed in the 1970s.
Cinnamon Rabbit Characteristics
Of course, the Cinnamon Rabbit breed doesn’t have this name for no reason. It was named by children, after all.
The Cinnamon Rabbit is colored cinnamon. This is the vast majority of the color on this breed.
There will be streaks of gray across the back, and small amounts of gray coloring in the fur, but they are going to be cinnamon-colored in nearly every other place.
This rabbit has the traditional commercial shaped body of a rabbit. They weigh a maximum of 5kg, with the majority of rabbits sitting at about the 3kg mark.
They do take up a rather healthy amount of space. This is mostly due to the fact that they are quite wide near the rear end.
The Purpose of the Rabbit
As we mentioned before; this is an accidental breed of rabbits created by children. We have no idea what their intentions with the rabbit were.
We assume that it was a breed created for a little bit of ‘fun’ more than anything. In fact, it was never meant to be a commercially available breed. It was probably just designed a pet until they realized the viability of the breed.
Nowadays, while the Cinnamon Rabbit is certainly used as a pet, and we encourage people to have them because it is such a lovely rabbit, the quality of the coat and the size of the rabbit means that it is raised heavily in commercial environments.
In fact, if you eat rabbit meat, there is a good chance that it would have come from a Cinnamon Rabbit, it is that popular.
If you want one as a pet, then you may find them appear in pet stores on occasion but, for the most part, this is going to be a rabbit that is mostly confined to the meat industry or if you do want one as a pet, then you may need to pick it up from specific breeders.
The Lifespan of the Cinnamon Rabbit
One of the main reasons as to why people are so interested in the Cinnamon Rabbit breed as a pet is simply because it is one of the longest-lived rabbits out there.
In fact, in a home environment, this rabbit could easily live to ten years old. This is far higher than most other rabbits of the same size. Even if it is not able to live to 10, it is likely going to hit 8.
This, once again, is going to be far higher than most similar rabbit breeds.
The great part about the Cinnamon Rabbit Breed is that it really doesn’t have that much in the way of major health issues. It is an easy pet to raise and, to be honest with you, with the quality of coat this rabbit boasts, it can be raised in just about any environment.
The Temperament of the Cinnamon Rabbit Breed
Obviously, this is going to vary on a rabbit by rabbit basis. However, the Cinnamon Rabbit breed is a rather calm and docile animal.
It does have bursts of energy every now and then, but it is a rather laid-back creature who does love a good cuddle every now and then. This is just as well, really. After all, who wouldn’t want to cuddle up to a lovely ball of fluff like this?
Do bear in mind that the Cinnamon Rabbit Breed does crave attention a lot more than other rabbit breeds.
It is a ridiculously social breed, so it would probably help if you purchased a couple at the same time if you are raising them as pets. You will love the interactions the rabbits will have with one another.
Raising the Cinnamon Rabbit Breed
One of the reasons why this rabbit is raised commercially is because it requires very little in the way of actual care. Nothing different from other rabbit breeds.
This means a good diet of hay (and some other fruits and vegetables), and clipping of toenails every so often. Of course, if you are raising one as a pet, you will want to pay more attention to how you look after your rabbit.
This means brushing them regularly. It is a great way to keep their coat looking nice and pristine. This is also a rabbit that seems to function well when it has a lot of space to roam around.
For this reason, we suggest that you raise this rabbit in the comfort of your home. Do not have it outside in a hutch, it doesn’t function well in small spaces. It needs the ability to roam around all day, and this is something that you can’t really guarantee if you are keeping them outside.
