Blueberries are sweet, nutritious, and very popular. They are often considered as a superfood because they are low in calories and incredibly high in fiber, vitamins C and K. Eating blueberries provide health benefits for people, but can rabbits eat blueberries?
Can Rabbits Eat Blueberries?
Absolutely! Most of the rabbits love blueberries and all types of berries. Actually, rabbits love fruits and they are known to be extremely fond of them.
However, it should be kept in mind that bunnies tend to have a very sensitive digestive system. Therefore blueberries should serve as a dessert or an as a treat for your bunnies. They should not be part of the daily rabbit diet.
If the bunny is under 3 months of age you should not give them any, otherwise, they should be given in moderation.
Remember, they are just like us and an imbalance in their diets can prove really problematic.
How Many Blueberries Can a Bunny Have?
You shouldn’t be feeding a rabbit that much at all. In fact, the blueberries will be a treat for the rabbit. They shouldn’t be eating them every single day.
The general rule of thumb about how many blueberries you can feed your rabbit is that you can give them twice a week and no more than 2-3 blueberries at a time. This should be your safe limit.
Two times a week is perfect as a reward, especially if you are training them tricks!
Basically, this goes for all fruits which are bunny safe — apples (no pips), grapes, strawberries, bananas, etc. And also for sweet vegetables like carrots — small amounts as a treat only.
Are Blueberries Safe For Bunnies To Eat?
In general, blueberries are safe for rabbits to eat but because rabbits tend to have a very sensitive digestive system, if they have too many blueberries in their diet, it can lead to bacterial dis-balance. But this goes for other fruits as well.
When you are giving the rabbit blueberries for the first time, you will want to watch them for a couple of days after. You will be able to see whether they have digested it well, or managed to get sick from the blueberries.
And do not forget to wash the blueberries before you give them to your bunnies.
