Bunnies and rabbits are two of the same animal, but they have many subtle differences. Though not in the way you might think.
What is a bunny and what is a rabbit? Rabbits are rodents of the order of Lagomorph, part of the mammalian family of Leporidae. They have long ears, big hind legs, and short fur. A bunny on the other hand is an informal word for a young hare or bunny rabbit.
So, are there really any differences between bunny vs rabbit?
What is the difference between a bunny vs rabbit?
A bunny is an informal, affectionate word for young hare or bunny rabbit. They are often a term of endearment given to domesticated rabbits.
The term rabbits, on the other hand, can mean both domestic and wild rabbits.
What is a rabbit
A rabbit is a small mammal that can be found in many parts of the world. They are best known for their long ears, which can vary in size from one breed to another.
Rabbits typically live under the ground or burrow into surface-level areas. They eat a diet that is mostly made up of hay and leafy plants such as cabbage, carrots, dandelions, and other types of vegetables.
Where did the term bunny come from?
The word bunny, meaning simply “rabbit” or “a small rabbit” in modern English comes from “bun”. Bun is a regional term used for both rabbits and squirrels in England going back to at least the 16th century.
Up until the 1700s, these animals were called “coneys”. The term originated from the French word “cunil”, derived from the Latin term “cuniculus” (meaning rabbit or burrow).
But that was before we realized how much more fun it sounds like when you call them bunnies instead!
Why are bunnies more popular than rabbits
It can be said that rabbit is a more formal term compared to bunny. Since it’s a term of endearment, it’s safe to say that it’s likely that many pet lovers prefer calling their furry friends bunny instead of rabbit.
Are there any other differences between bunnies and rabbits that I should know about before getting one as a pet
Not at all! They are one and the same.
A bunny can either be purebreds such as Holland Lop or crossbreeds such as American Fuzzy Lops (which are bigger than buns). What’s so great about them?
There’s nothing more adorable than seeing one hop around your backyard!
